Flora of North America (2006) includes Cirsium vernale as a synonym of Cirsium perplexans. Kartesz (1994) recognized them as distinct taxa.

The ELLINK is attached with the old records and the lineage is up to date. A record with the broader taxonomic concept of Cirsium perplexans (PDAST2E3W0) was created and is now the Standard.
