Update on Biotics 5 Data Exchange

If you are attending Biodiversity without Boundaries this week, please join us for the session "Data Exchange in Biotics 5: How, Why, and When" on Thursday, April 30 from 10:30 – noon (immediately following the Data Manager Workshop). Staff of NatureServe's Information Systems Division will provide an in-depth look at the new data exchange approach and the latest news on its status.

When we last reported to you on the status of data exchange functionality in Biotics 5 we were anticipating an earlier release. However, careful review and testing pointed out some necessary corrections and helped us make some important improvements. These modifications are now being completed and will allow us to begin a phased-in resumption of exchanges with the network. As previously announced, the initial exchanges will comprise updates to global data from NatureServe to member program databases and updates of EO data from programs to NatureServe's central database. Final testing of a full, two-way exchange of the targeted data in a copy of an active member program database is scheduled for this week. Following the completion of this test, the first "live" exchanges will take place with several of the programs that constitute the Biotics 5 Data Exchange Working Group (MN, NE, YT). Input from the Working Group during these early exchanges will help us refine the tool further as exchanges proceed and are completed for all member programs over a period of several months.

For those of you who will not be able to join us for the Data Exchange session at BwB, it will be repeated during a Webinar scheduled for May 20, 2:00-3:30 EDT. The webinar will also include a review of results from the recent Biotics 5 user survey. Input from the survey will help guide priority setting for functionality to be included in new Biotics releases over the coming year.

Please look for the webinar announcement shortly, and if you're in Traverse City, we hope to see you there!
